Omaha Juneteenth Flag Raising Cereomy
Omaha "Juneteenth Week" Begins with
Flag Raising at Washington Library
(Omaha, Nebraska) - The Juneteenth Flag will be flying over Nebraska
at the Washington Branch Library following the opening ceremony of the weeklong 2009 Omaha Juneteenth Celebration,
on Friday, June 12, 2009, beginning at 12:00noon. Located at the intersection of 30th & Ames Streets, the Washington Branch Library was the
location of the historic first Juneteenth Flag raising ceremony last year.
"We are truly excited about the Juneteenth Celebration in Omaha," states Ms. Willie Williams,
Executive Director of Juneteenth Nebraska, Inc., host of the Omaha Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony.
"The Juneteenth Flag represents freedom from enslavement and America's 2nd Independence Day Celebration."
Juneteenth commemorates the day when slaves in the last geographic area in America where slavery existed learned of their freedom. This took place on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, when Union General Gordon Granger read General Order #3, announcing that "all slaves are free" by Proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862, and issued on January 1, 1863. It took over two and a half years for the news to travel to southwest Texas.
The National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign is working with Ms. Willie Williams and Juneteenth Nebraska, Inc., to establish Juneteenth as a state holiday observance in Nebraska and a national holiday observance in America.
"The Juneteenth Flag was created by our former Massachusetts Juneteenth State Director, Ben Haith, and has flown over the city of Boston for many years," states Rev. Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D., Founder & Chairman of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF) and
the National Juneteenth Christian Leadership Council (NJCLC). "We are circulating a petition for the U.S. Postal Service to create a American Flags of Freedom postage stamp."
